Why did saying his religion wouldn't affect his presidency work for JFK but not Mitt Romney?

Because Kennedy was Catholic which was at the very least accepted as a normal religion at the time. Romney is a Mormon which is widely considered a borderline cult. I mean, Mormons believe that God lives on another planet and that if they wear "magic underwear" it will keep them from having pre-marital . BIG difference between being Catholic and Mormon.
